Nottingham History

Founded in Anglo-Saxon times on a strategic point on the River Trent around 600AD, Nottingham was always a centre of trade and commerce.

Its’ strategic location, also attracted Royal attention and in 1068, William the Conqueror built a castle on a hill overlooking Nottingham as a military stronghold and royal palace, housing every medieval English king In August 1642, Charles I rode out of the castle to raise his standard and commence the Civil War.

After the Civil War, the castle (the castle actually associated with the Robin Hood legend) was razed and, in the 1670s, the ruins were used to build a ducal mansion.

Burnt out by rioters in 1831, the castle as it is known as today was reconstructed as an art gallery and museum.

In the second half of the 19th century Nottingham exploded off the back of the industrial revolution. With the population leaping from 10,000 to 50,000 to feed the huge lace, textile and hosiery industries the rapid growth led to a slum.

Cleared in the early 20th century the slum made way for the present lay-out of the city which has continued to grow.
